BASIC KNITTING ELEMENT OF KNITTING:

1. Needle
2. Sniker
3. Cam

Needle:

It is the first knitting elements. Needle is a hooked metal parts
which is used to make a loop.

There are three types of needles:

A. Latch needle
B. Bearded needle and
C. Compound needle.

Latch needle:

The needle consists of six main parts:
Stem – Used to hold the course of old loops.
Hook –The hook is used to catch a thread and form loops.
Rivet – Holds the latch in place and allows it to pivot.
Latch – The latch combines the task performed by the presser bar and the beard of the bearded needle.
Butt – The butt enables the movement of the needle to be controlled by a cam mechanism. A track
raises and lowers the needle.
Tail – Used to provide support to the needle.

Various Terms of Knitting:

Course:

A course is a predominantly horizontal raw of needle loops produced by adjacent needles
during the same knitting cycle called course. (Loop length * No of loop

Wales:

Vertical column of loops produced by same needle in knitting cycle is called the Wales of
the fabric. i.e. The number of vertical columns of loop of knitted fabrics is called wale.

Face loop:

If the legs of new loop is passes over the old loop is called face loop.

Back loop:

If the legs of new loop is passes under the old loop is called face loop

Stitch density:

It is the total number of needles loops in a square area measure as a square inch. It is
expressed as-
Course per inch × Wales per inch.

Stitch length:

Length of one loop in the course direction express in mm.
Number of needle: Machine diameter × Machine gauge × 3.1416.

Types of Knitting:

There are two types of knitting

a. Warp Knitting.
b. Weft Knitting.

Warp Knitting:
In warp knitting, one or two yarn produce vertical column of loops and fabric is produced in
length way. Each loop in the horizontal direction is made from a different thread and the no
of threads used to produce such a fabric is at least equal to the number of loops in horizontal
raw. e.g. – Net, Mesh fabric etc

Weft or Circular Knitting:
In a weft knitted structure, a horizontal raw of loops can be made by using one thread and the
thread runs in horizontal direction. e.g. – single jersey, rib, interlock etc

Introduction of knitting

Knitting is defined as the construction of fabric by interlocking loops of a single yarn
with the help of hooked needles. Each raw of such loops hanging from the one immediately
preceding it. Interloping consists of forming yarns into loops. The loops are held together by
the yarn passing from one to the next.
